How to draw a Squirtle Pg. 1

Description

I can't find a single Deviation explaining how to draw a Squirtle so I decided to make my own. Oh, and before I start, so no one gets confused: a line is never-ending, a segment has two defined end-points, and a ray has one defined end-point but the other point is never-ending.

I. Step 1's pretty simple: draw a circle.

II. Draw 3 vertical segments and 3 horizontal segments equally spaced on the circle. It's preferable that they're as close to equal-spacing as possible because you'll be using them as references.

III. Draw a diamond in the center of the circle, the points about 3/4 of the way down the last segment outward toward each cardinal point. If you're drawing this on MS Paint, which this is designed for, it'll be a lot easier to get the spacing right if you position the points of the diamond the length of one arm of the crosshairs from each edge.

IV. This step is very simple, but if you don't do it it will make the next page a lot harder to get right. In the center of the circle there should now be a square shape, made more prominent by the addition of the diamond. At the center of each side of the square is the middle segment of either the sets of 3 vertical or 3 horizontal segments. Using the left-hand side as an example, draw a segment diagonally to the left and connect it to the far left end of the upper horizontal segment. Mirror this below it, then repeat the process for each of the other sides of the square.

Optional Step: Though not required for the overall picture, you can draw a second diamond around the first one if you want to adjust the size of the markings on the shell as you go. For this new diamond, if you decide to use it, place its points at the ends of the middle segments instead of the 3/4 mark. I didn't use this second diamond when I drew the original drawing, but I will be using it for the rest of this tutorial. In the end you'll only keep 1 of them.

V. Draw 2 horizontal segments, 1 towards the top of the circle and 1 towards the bottom, to cut the top-most and bottom-most sections of the triangle in half. Copy this with the vertical points to form a square.

VI. This next step is easy to mess up on if you're not careful, since the intertwining lines are starting to become very complicated at this point. First draw a triangle perfectly alligned within the inner square, the one you created in Step 2, its arrowhead point facing up and its base facing down. Next draw an identical triangle over it but facing the opposite direction, down instead of up. Finally, as the last set of guide-lines, draw a segment just below the upward-facing triangle's arrowhead point, where the downward-facing triangle's left and right sides overlap the inner and/or outer diamonds. Do the same with the other triangle.

Now that we have the guide-lines set-up, the next page will explain how to make this jigsaw puzzle of seemingly-random segments look like a Squirtle's shell.
