Chapter 1: Dream...or Prophecy?

An Umbreon ran through the night, as fleeting as a shadow, its black paws beating a rhythmic tattoo upon the pavement. Silver moonlight shown down upon it as it raced, giving its cobalt fur a bright sheen even in the darkness of the night. The circle upon its forehead glowed with a faint blue tint to it, while its other markings remained golden. The light of the full moon lit its path through oblivion, its destination somewhere beyond the veil...

Suddenly the fox-like Pokemon slid to a stop, turned the skid into a spin, and fired a Shadow Ball in the opposite direction, directly behind it. The energy collided with a shapeless fog of darkness, which instantly dissipated around it, and the Shadow Ball flew off into the sky. A heartbeat later the darkness fired an orb of oil-black energy, something far darker than any Shadow Ball, at the Umbreon, launching it twenty feet into a wall.

As its body left the moonlight, the Umbreon's fur turned snow-white, its circles a bright silver, but only for a moment as it returned to the lunar glow, moving to tackle its opponent. The darkness caught it mid-air and in the same movement smashed its head into the cement. Blood dripped from its grasp, turning the black-gray street surface crimson as it lifted the Pokemon up to its face. Their eyes met, the creature's blood-red and the Umbreon's ocean-blue, as the Umbreon's fur faded to white, blocked from the moonlight's bathing aura.

A blood-curdling scream escaped from its snout as the fog began to flow over its form, writhing in agony. In the moments before it became completely consumed by darkness, the Umbreon's form went limp, blood falling in a slow but steady stream from its body....

________________________________

I awoke to a scream, bolting upright and forward on instinct. However, I was halted by the bright glare of sunlight and immediately retreated back into the box, covering my head with my paws.

I growled in annoyance as I lay there, becoming fully awake. Not entirely, considering it was daytime, but enough to think straight and gather my thoughts. I was never a morning person and it never helped my short temper whenever I woke up from a nightmare in the middle of the day, a time when I'm usually fast asleep, waiting for the sun to set. Trainer-owned Umbreon might like the day, but nighttime is my element, its enshrouding darkness is the only setting where I feel safe and secure. Whenever I happen to be up and about during daylight, and there have been a few occasions, I am always on edge, jumping at every shadow, every little noise, and it is hard for me to concentrate for any length of time. Such outings last an hour or two at most if I can work up the courage to go two feet first. After those first steps, as is characteristic of me, I am committed. Odd, I know, but it's true; I'm weird that way.

A quick scan of the area revealed that the source of the disturbance was not within the immediate area, so I closed my eyes and set about falling back asleep. If the incident was still a matter of interest when night came around, I would deal with it then; if not, I would move on with my life and probably forget about it within an hour. I was asleep again almost immediately.
Part 1 of Chapter 1 of Angel of Darkness, a story inspired by the song "Angel of Darkness" sung by Alex C. and Yasmin K.

Here we're introduced to a mysterious "fog" creature. Its role here is both metaphorical and literal. Feel free to shoot a guess at it; it's easier to discern than the metaphors I usually use.

As always, critiques are welcome with open arms, criticism is only allowed when it's constructive...and you know the rest.

EDIT: No changes made to the text. Instead, divert your eyes toward the Preview Image. Umbreon are really, REALLY hard to draw, but surprisingly easy to color.
